I is teh ceiling cat!
Jul. 18th, 2007 11:38 amFirst, Happy (belated) birthday to
ithidrial! Wishing you happiness and all and sundry fannish pleasures!
Secondly, I'm watching y'all!!!
Fits my life, lately, at least concerning the LJ participation. Real life, OTOH, has been rather busy.
I took three days off work last week and drove to visit
dresta11 in her Saaremaa farm. Took my horse there, too. Seems that Pihv will continue to be a charity project and is currently retired at the early age of seven due to arthrosis of coffin and pastern joints in both forelimbs. He had shown intermittent passing lameness of the right fore for about a year, while on pasture and so I took him to the Uni clinic before driving to Saaremaa and had him x-rayed. Agreed with the diagnosis/prognosis made by colleagues there, which in vetspeak is 'make more sausage'. Fortunately for Pihv, who has already lived ca 6 years above and beyond his allotted time (I bought him so that he wouldn't be sold for meat, hence the nickname Pihv - means 'cutlet, steak' in Estonian. His 'proper' name is Hamburg *g*), I never had any high expectations about his performance and I can afford to keep him on pasture, so he's got a new nickname now - he's Undead Sausage.
Presently, he's moping a bit, 'cause his companions (
dresta11's mare and foal) haven't gotten there yet, also,
dresta11 has been evilly introducing him to freeranging (which means, "OMG, you mean I has ta decide whether I wants to go out, stay in, eat hay, eat grass? Too many options! Horsey head explody!"), and there are flies. The future will promise brightness though, as Alondra will arrive, together it'll be more fun and I'll send some fly repellent gel over.
So far, Pihv has acted as a neighbour magnet, attracting people who never communicated with
dresta11 before into horse-talk and offers of grazing.
Those three days, it dawned to me, were actually my first days of vacation in almost 2 years, as I didn't get any last summer due to the job change. They were spent in worthy pursuits like sleeping, dogwalking, reading, eating, installing the electrical fencing generator (it's a bitch to insert a 1 m long grounding rod into the ground that is mostly, um, stones) and avoiding the nefarious plots hatched by wild strawberries, raspberries and creamy strawberries (those are the big hairy ones). I desperately did not want to return to the civilization. Neither did my dog.
The second half of last week was spent in a work mode, that means displaying/selling our stuff during the 4-day Nations Cup showjumping competition. I've been part of riding competitions in one capacity or another for the last 20 years, almost, so it's a familiar and welcome thing, but still, four days kinda makes me tired. And my cats are ready to disown me after not seeing me for a week. Also, as this week will likely see the start of the repairs inside the flat (like, um, laying new flagstones in the kitchen and bathroom, and putting in a bath and a toilet), I'm inclined to fear the retribution in the way of peeing on the couch and chewing my jugular while I'm at sleep.
The biggest news though is that I'm officially gonna blow this joint in a couple of months and go back to being a practicing vet again. Yayyy! I'm going to work with my present colleague in her new clinic. Went to see the rooms on Monday, and the location is superb, the rooms are good and I am pretty damn excited! Now, I only have to let my present employer know that, oops, you know, um, you're going to lose BOTH of your small animal people like, um, very soon. *cough* I like my present firm, and I'm feeling faintly guilty for leaving only after 1,5 years, but the opportunity is simply too good to pass by. Mmmm, I'll betorturing treating small furry creatures again.
As to the fannish side, I've finished watching all three seasons of Stargate:Atlantis. I picked it up looking for mindless entertainment, but it kinda exceeded my expectations manyfold. I mean, there are even some ISSUES besides pretty people and team snark and stuff. Also, lots of good writers in that fandom. And, well, there's Rodney McKay. I've found I like it when I can mainline the whole aired canon in one go and then continue with an intensive fic-reading. Unfortunately, this approach does not work with Buffy - once I've managed to look deeper, it is too ... serious, in a way, for me to watch like that. My emotions just get exhausted after a couple of eps. Which means that I need to slot it in between 'lighter entertainment'. Actually, I've begun to suspect that the same goes for Supernatural and would also go for Highlander, when I finally find the time to rewatch. (Too) deep emotional investment in a show apparently equals 'cannot take much in one go' for me.
I haven't been able to even think of writing anything, and for quite some time it even didn't bother me. Recently though I've found myself being mildly cranky over that, so maybe my brain's creative side has decided it'll want to come out of the hibernation some time soon. Would be nice. Hope springs eternal. Or something.
Friend's little jack russell terrier has been mated. If by any miracle it'll have lots of puppies (that means more than 2, maybe like 3 *g*), I'd probably get one. Let it be a lesson to you all on 'never say never'. There was a time when I was quite adamant in saying that I'll never get a small dog. Hmpfh.
Eh, time to stop rambling now and get up and about. There's an afternoon filled with shopping for floor materials ahead of me *cringes*.
And, finally, a random tidbit : Newsweek says that Estonia is ahead of US in terms of internet connections per household". Somehow, I'm not surprised. After all, here is the land of free WIFI and in addition to the sundry cable internet services, every mobile phone company offers its own wireless services, there has been a nationwide project for getting wireless internet to the faraway farms and the freshest news is a wireless 'net service that operates on the frequency of old now obsolete NMT mobile phones. I think 99,9 % of the country has some kind of internet connection available. Of course, me and
dresta11 are sure it will lead to an apocalypse. We ride!
