I got an A, but it really was fairly easy word selection. I've seen language quizes where I couldn't answer a thing.
Also, what you said about grammar and cases made me laugh. I gave up on learning Polish properly because I can't be bothered to learn the conjugations of the case/gender system, and they only have seven cases. How the hell do you get to 14 in Est? I hated grammar at HS, of whichever language. Only when I got to university and leaned the propper way to do linguistics I discovered the joy of it. HS really kills subjects. And the dangling modifier bit is not really an issue of grammar, just bad usage.
